This is a benefit show for Zach Rongers.
Zach’s journey
This journey began for Zach in 2002 at the age of 23 when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. After learning of his diagnosis, he tried to beat the disease using chemotherapy, radiation, and other complementary and alternative treatment methods. With very little support and no insurance, he finished treatment in April of 2003 and was declared to be in remission from the disease. It was a hard road for him, but things looked positive because in most cases, this type of cancer is very treatable and the cure rate is over 90%!
The next 2 years of Zach’s life were as normal as can be after going through multiple treatments. He met a girl named Erin who was also a survivor of the same disease. She had the same treatment in 1997 at the age of 17 and they would talk about their "common bond" and support each other. Eventually, they fell in love and decided they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. They were engaged in May of 2004 and set the date to be married for July, 2005.
In February of 2005, Zach found out that his disease was back. He had been having some of the classic Hodgkin’s symptoms such as itching and coughing and a PET scan confirmed that his disease had in fact come back. They decided it would be best to postpone the wedding until Zach was in remission again.
Over the next 10 months, he underwent more chemotherapy and had an autologous stem cell transplant at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston on December 14, 2005. The process was grueling and recovery was long and difficult. The hope was that this was finally all behind him and he could move on, get married, and enjoy life to its fullest.
Zach and Erin were married on March 11, 2006 and celebrated their honeymoon in Holland and Belgium. Life progressed beautifully over the next few months with Zach and Erin enjoying a cancer-free life and a life that was almost normal!
October 2007, they once again learned that Zach's disease was back for the third time. Though the chances for a cure diminish with every relapse, they are not giving up the fight to find a cure for Zach. He participated in a clinical trial at MD Anderson the fall and winter of 2007 and experienced success with this experimental drug for a few months, but once again, his disease started to grow. He then went through a few low-dose chemotherapy regimens to try and maintain the disease, but once again, his disease progressed.
He is currently undergoing more chemotherapy in preparation for an umbilical cord blood stem cell transplant at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston during the summer of 2008. This is a relatively new procedure that offers a chance for long-term CURE.
The transplant procedure will be physically grueling and emotionally tough, and will require Zach to live in the Houston metropolitan area with a caregiver for 100 days after transplant. He will be away from home for a minimum of 4 months. During that time,
Erin will want to be by his side as much as work, time, and money allows. They will be faced with paying a mortgage and utilities in Fayetteville and renting an apartment in Houston. They will also have prescriptions, medical bills and the cost travel to and from Houston. When Erin is away from work caring for Zach, she will be taking an unpaid leave from her job as the Public Affairs Coordinator at the Donald W. Reynolds Boys & Girls Club of Fayetteville. With neither of them bringing in an income when they are down in Houston, things will be extremely difficult.
We are asking for any financial assistance you would be able to contribute. We want Zach and Erin get through this trying time in their lives without the constant financial worries they have faced in the past. We want to help provide them an opportunity to simply focus on battling and healing his cancer with his wife by his side for support.
Thank you for your considerations! All donations will be graciously accepted!
